Collective Meeting - January 14, 2014

Minutes from Collective Meeting 1/14/14

A brief meeting was held on January 14, to announce the results of the vote for this year's Collective speaker and to begin planning for their visit.

The results of the poll for Collective speaker are below. We had a total of 54 responses.

  1. David Erickson 1 (2%)
  2. Joel Beinin 8 (15%)
  3. Jessica Stites Mor 5 (9%)
  4. Elizabeth Escobedo 3 (6%)
  5. Jordanna Bailkin 3 (6%)
  6. Edith Sheffer 5 (9%)
  7. Nick Saenz 3 (6%)
  8. Jessica Graham 3 (6%)
  9. Alyosha Goldstein 14 (26%)
  10. Robin Kelley 6 (11%)
  11. Moon Ho Jung 3 (6%)
Alyosha Goldstein, from University of New Mexico, will be our 2014 Collective Speaker.
His work considers the transnational and domestic politics of the War on Poverty. His most recent book, Poverty in Common, utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to both historicize and theorize the contradictions and strategies of governance under liberal democracy.

Possible dates were proposed for hosting Dr. Goldstein: either the week of March 31-April 4 or the week of April 7-April 11.
Mary will communicate with Maki Smith (who nominated him) and Dr. Goldstein to arrange for a date and flight to San Diego.

Budget concerns: We will be paying for Dr. Goldstein's hotel, airfare, and a small honorarium, and need more funds to be able to cover all of the expenses. Johnathan to ask Dr. Alvarez for more funds for the Collective to help cover this. Use of GSA funds was also discussed.

Other Business:
Teresa Walch, our faculty liaison, cannot make department meetings due to scheduling conflicts, so Sky Johnston agreed to take over for this quarter. Sky will attend department meetings and send out minutes to the list serve.

Admit Day - Began to discuss plans for hosting Sunday night dinner on Admit Day, brainstormed possible options for location. Blind Lady Ale House, where we have gone in the past, is being considered, but might be too loud and possibly hard to find space to accommodate the entire group.
